“Cosmography & Co.” – What books tell us
Short lecture
The Museum bei der Kaiserpfalz has a considerable collection of bound prints from the early modern period in its collection. Most of them come from the authorship of Ingelheim's son and polymath Sebastian Münster (1488-1552). In addition to the content, these books have much more to offer. The printed pages used to be sold unbound, and only the new owner could turn them into a book in the modern sense by adding a cover. Depending on the financial background, more or less valuable binding material was chosen with or without decoration. Many book owners left personal traces such as supralibros, bookplates or handwritten entries.
Museum employee Renate Fath uses some early prints to show the ways in which their provenance can be discovered. You will also come across illustrious previous owners in the museum holdings.
