Wall remnant

Until about 1800 Altegasse (the name probably derives from Algesheimer Gasse – the alley leading to Gau-Algesheim) was on the crossing of Heimesgasse/Zwerchweg and was divided into two sections by the so-called middle gate. The lower, suburb like settlements outside the fortress stretched to the Selz. There a further gate was located, whose remains were still visible on the southern wall of a former mill building until the 1950’s. This mill, first mentioned in 1370 changed its function several times (paper mill, oil mill, bakery) While the major parts of the buildings were demolished and the mill ditch filled up, a large baroque style building is still preserved.

The entrance to Untere Zwerchweg, i.e. Querweg (cross path) is now the last piece of the former surrounding walls, about 35 metres of which have been uncovered and are partly integrated into the buildings of the adjacent farms.
