“Man errs as long as he digs...” - Fraud and Errors in Archaeology
Archaeology is exciting when mysteries of the past are solved or major discoveries are made. Another side of the coin, however, involves spectacular errors, the persistence of systemic flaws, and blatant cases of fraud. While these phenomena exist in other sciences as well, archaeology often gives rise to stories that are particularly compelling to tell. This lecture will present insightful and entertaining cases from the last 200 years, as well as address particularly persistent misconceptions, such as pre-astronautics or theories regarding lines of force.
