“With Tunic and Ink” – Romans in Ingelheim
Family Museum Festival
Did Roman soldiers really live in Ingelheim 2,000 years ago? We will find out more at the Rhine-Hessian Roman Day, when the legionnaires of the IG “Imperium Romanum” move into the museum at the Imperial Palace. At the Family Museum Festival, visitors can get up close to the fully equipped legionnaires, marvel at their marching gear, or ask them exciting questions, such as whether Roman legionnaires could actually write. That's not so easy in “Roman cursive.” It becomes all the more interesting when great writers and little artists can try out this special script for themselves – in a creative workshop in the museum courtyard featuring ancient ink, quills, and wooden tablets. But beware: a few ink blots may find their way onto the writing pad.
The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the special family program from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy pizza, ice cream, and coffee.
Admission to the museum and the Roman Day Rheinhessen activities are free all day. There may be a small charge for materials for individual workshops.
