Those who grew up with the D-Mark have fulfilled one or the other wish with it: Sebastian Münster, the man from the blue hundred.
The monument to the most famous son of the city stands in front of the Remigius Church. Sebastian Münster was born in Ingelheim in 1488, presumably in a hospital nearby that his father managed. As a teenager, Münster left Ingelheim to study Franciscanism in Heidelberg. He became a polymath and humanist, a professor, and the head of the University of Basel. His greatest legacy was the Cosmographia, an almanac compiling the knowledge of the world in 17 volumes.
Today, a bronze monument from 1988 by the artist Karlheinz Oswald stands in front of the Remigius Church, made of bronze plates depicting images from the Cosmographia. Through a permanent exhibition, the Museum at the Kaiserpfalz informs visitors about the life of Sebastian Münster.
