Join aquatic ecologist Melanie Ströder on this guided hike into the dynamic habitats of floodplain landscapes, where water, land, and life are uniquely intertwined.
Learn why intact floodplains are crucial for biodiversity, flood protection, and the climate, and what threatens them. Along the way, discover the diversity of flora and fauna native to these transition zones between water and land. You will learn how natural river dynamics shape floodplain landscapes and what role they play as natural buffers during flood events. The tour also offers insights into the work of the WWF, which is committed to the protection and restoration of floodplains in Germany. Projects on the Middle Elbe near Dessau, on the Upper Isar, and on the Ammer River demonstrate how targeted measures can restore habitats and promote the natural dynamics of rivers. We will experience the beauty and importance of these unique ecosystems with all of our senses.

Meeting point and duration
The tour starts at Ingelheim am Rhein train station (49.97613, 8.05365) and ends at Heidesheim am Rhein train station (49.99708, 8.11157). Participants who arrive by car can easily return to the starting point in "Ingelheim am Rhein" by train. The journey takes approximately 5 minutes, and a ticket can be purchased at the train station at their own expense.
The tour starts at approximately 9:00 a.m. and ends at approximately 12:30 p.m., including breaks and time for sharing information (distance to be covered is approximately 10 kilometers).
Arrival and departure by public transport (from Mainz Central Station with the RB26 to Ingelheim) is possible and encouraged.

Requirements and prerequisites:
Easy difficulty: Ascent and descent on hiking trails and paths. The selected areas are easily accessible. Everyone can choose their own pace and tour according to their own surefootedness.
