The Zuckerbergtor formed a small passage through the high and late medieval fortification wall on the southern side of the imperial palace. It is still the only verifiable gate of the Staufer fortifications. The origin of the terrain designation "Zuckerberg" is unclear. However, it is apparently not a regional peculiarity, as it can also be found in many other German-speaking places. In some cases, "Zuckerberg" there refers to the conical elevation in a landscape.
The narrow and intricate residential development that can still be discovered on the inside and outside of the gate is characteristic of the Zucker area. Modest small buildings with one to four rooms were built against the fortification wall and thus significantly contributed to the preservation of the fortifications up to the present day.
