Archaeological summer exhibition ‘Tomb 447’ in the kING

From 5 to 24 August, the kING Kultur- und Kongresshalle Ingelheim is showing the special exhibition ‘Grave 447 - A Frankish warrior on his way to the afterlife’. The spectacular finds of an untouched warrior's grave from the 7th century, discovered in Ingelheim in 2023, will be on display. With weapons, jewellery and everyday objects, the multimedia exhibition offers exciting insights into life and death at the time of the terraced burial culture for a period of three weeks.

The extraordinary staging in the Great Hall of the kING, including an impressive 3D holography of the warrior, brings history to life - and makes the warrior from grave 447 visible to the public for the first time.

The exhibition is under the patronage of the Rhineland-Palatinate Minister of the Interior, Michael Ebling, and is presented by Ingelheimer Kultur und Marketing GmbH (IkUM) and the Kaiserpfalz Ingelheim archaeological research centre.

The exhibition is open daily from 5 to 24 August at the kING Kultur- und Kongresshalle, Fridtjof-Nansen-Platz 5, 55218 Ingelheim. Admission costs from 5 euros for adults (concessions from 3 euros). For families, there is a family ticket from 10 euros - this is valid for two adults and up to three children under the age of 18. Tickets are available on site at the exhibition box office and in advance from Ticket Regional plus a booking fee, which includes travel on the RNN ticket. Children and young people up to the age of 14 are admitted free of charge, but must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is also free for school classes.

Anyone wishing to experience the exhibition under the expert guidance of the Ingelheim tour guides can either do so as part of an individually bookable group tour for 90 euros plus admission to the exhibition, or join one of the public guided tours that take place on various dates (tickets from 13 euros incl. guided tour and admission). Public curator tours are also offered, where visitors can experience the exhibition under a special thematic focus with one of the curators from the Kaiserpfalz Research Centre. The curator tour on the subject of ‘Reconstruction methods’ will take place on Saturday, 9 August at 4 pm. Visitors can discover the topic of ‘Anthropology’ in the exhibition on Sunday, 17 August at 10 am. The third curator-guided tour focusing on ‘Excavation methods’ awaits guests on Sunday, 24 August at 4 pm.

Special, age-appropriate school tours are offered for school classes from Year 1 to Year 13. These are scheduled for the first week after the summer holidays, from Tuesday, 19 August to Friday, 22 August and cost 90 euros per tour.

Three scientific lectures and a curator-guided tour with culinary accompaniment will accompany the exhibition. The first lecture will be given by Dr Ellen Riemer from the Landesmuseum Mainz on Thursday, 7 August at 6 pm in the kING under the title ‘Grave 41a - A rich female grave from the 7th century’. On Tuesday, 19 August, Dr Lutz Grunwald from the Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA) will give a lecture on ‘The Moselle Estuary and Europe in the Early Middle Ages’ at 6 pm at kING - the lecture is being held in cooperation with the Historischer Verein Ingelheim e.V. (Ingelheim Historical Society). In cooperation with the Ingelheim Continuing Education Centre, Matylda Gierszewska-Noszczynska from the Kaiserpfalz Research Centre will give a lecture entitled ‘What Pippin would have seen if he had been in Ingelheim?’ on Thursday, 21 August at 7 pm at the WBZ. All lectures will be followed by a tour of the ‘Tomb 447’ exhibition.

On the final weekend of the exhibition on Saturday 23 August, visitors can look forward to the special curator's tour ‘Warriors & Cuisine’ followed by finger food, wine and an exchange of ideas in the kING foyer.

As an accompanying programme for children, the ‘Yellow - Youth and Cultural Centre Ingelheim’ summer holiday fun offers a half-day programme in the ‘Tomb 447’ exhibition. On Tuesday, 12 August, children aged 9 to 12 can explore the exhibition from 9.00 am to 12.30 pm on a child-friendly guided tour followed by a workshop.
