“Broken Pottery Brings Good Luck”: a colourful family programme for International Museum Day at the Museum at the Imperial Palace

On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the Museum at the Imperial Palace will be celebrating International Museum Day from 10 am to 5 pm and invites you to enjoy an entertaining programme of events for the whole family. Under the motto ‘Shards bring good luck’, various activities will explore the fascinating world of Roman pottery and offer the chance to experience the detective work of archaeologists up close and try it out for yourself.

Exciting insights for young explorers

The day centres on free creative workshops for young visitors. From 1 pm to 3 pm, the museum courtyard will be transformed into an archaeological tinkering workshop: under the expert guidance of the museum’s educational staff, children can piece together individual pottery shards step by step to create various Roman vessels. This hands-on ‘puzzle activity’ demonstrates in a fun way how researchers handle ancient objects and what fascinating insights into everyday life in Roman times can be hidden even in the tiniest clay fragments. The workshop also shows that archaeology is often a labour of patience – and that every artefact tells its own story.

Free admission to the museum

In addition to the hands-on activities, the museum offers free admission to its exhibitions from 10 am to 5 pm. Visitors of all ages can explore the exhibits on the history of Ingelheim, from the Stone Age to the Palatinate of Charlemagne.
