On this “Culture and Delight Tour” linking the two cities, guests – accompanied by knowledgeable tour guides – visit historically significant sites and immerse themselves in the magic of these places. A total of four trips in a vintage coach are scheduled for 2026 – two of which start in Mainz and two in Ingelheim. The “Culture and Delight Tours” from Ingelheim to Mainz will take place on 21 August to Mainz’s Old Town and on 6 November to Mainz Cathedral. The trips from the state capital Mainz to Ingelheim will take place on 12 June to Charlemagne’s Imperial Palace and on 23 October to the Winzerkeller.
The first “Culture and Delight Tour”, starting in Ingelheim on 21 August, is themed “From the Imperial City to Mainz’s Old Town”. The journey on the traditional Mainz bus takes in the winding alleys, picturesque squares and historic buildings such as the Cathedral, St John’s Church and St Augustine’s Church. The idyllic Kirschgarten with its half-timbered houses is also on the itinerary.
The tour on 6 November is entitled “From the Imperial City to the ‘Holy See’” and focuses entirely on the historic Mainz Cathedral, which remains to this day a symbol of the power and significance of the Archbishops of Mainz. Guests will view ornate funerary monuments and the cathedral’s impressive cloister, whilst hearing fascinating stories about Mainz’s “Holy See”.
The first Mainz-Ingelheim Nostalgia Tour, entitled “Where the Emperor Once Resided”, sets off on 12 June from Mainz Central Station. From there, the vintage bus chugs its way to the red wine town, where the impressive remains of the Imperial Palace can be viewed. The second tour from Mainz to Ingelheim, taking place on 23 October, is dedicated to the theme ‘Cellar Comrades in the Red Wine Town’. During a guided tour of the historic Ingelheim wine cellar, guests are transported back to the turn of the 20th century. In the historic vaulted cellar, the award-winning permanent exhibition “Kellergenossen” takes guests on a journey through industrial and wine history.
After the guided tours, guests are treated – in true Rheinhessen style – to a glass of wine and a regional snack.
The idea for the concept came from the tour guides of Mainz and Ingelheim, who meet regularly to exchange ideas. The tours are organised by IkUM in cooperation with ‘mainzplus’, ‘Traditionsbus Mainz e. V.’ and the tour guides.
Tickets from 55 euros are available at the Tourist Information office in the Ingelheim Winzerkeller (Binger Straße 16), online at the Erlebnisshop at www.ingelheim-erleben.de or at mainz-booking.inet-mainz.de.
