The garden of Charlemagne & the "Capitulare de villis"

Capitularies are rulers' edicts of the Frankish kings, divided into chapters. They were written in Latin and give a good impression of how much Roman ideas were incorporated into the early medieval educational and administrative system.

The "Capitulare de villis" of Charlemagne, written around 800, regulated the administration and management of the court estates. It was supposed to ensure reliable supplies from the domains for the upkeep of the farm. The last chapter contains a list of 89 plants that should be cultivated in the gardens: a variety of medicinal herbs, but also vegetables and fruit trees. With the plant list of the "Capitulare de villis" it was suggested that gardens should be re-established in which herbs, vegetables and trees were planted. This diversity can be found in our Central European gardens to this day.
