Theophanu (rond 959/60-991) - "Orient meets Occident"

Shortly after her arrival in Rome, the twelve-year-old Theophanu from Constantinople married the emperor's son Otto II, who was completely unknown to her.

With the marriage, an alliance was concluded between the European Eastern and Western empires with the capitals Constantinople and Rome.
Theophanu became the most powerful woman of the Middle Ages in the Western Roman Empire.
After Otto II's early death, the only twenty-three-year-old widow and her power-conscious mother-in-law Adelheid secured the throne for their underage son Otto III. Diplomatically, the eloquent and highly educated Empress steered the fate of the empire until her untimely death at the age of thirty. Ingelheim became an important base of the imperial family due to its proximity to Mainz and close contact with Archbishop Willigis (975-1011).
