In 1122, a castle complex was mentioned for the first time in Gau-Algesheim, which was located at the site of today's Ardeck Castle. The castle complex is said to have originally been fortified: a defensive wall, a moat, and a drawbridge protected the complex from the outside and towards the town of Gau-Algesheim. However, the castle complex can only be verified in the 15th century; in the following period, it was converted into a palace. In the early 19th century, the defensive parts of the castle were removed. Today, Ardeck Castle is owned by the town of Gau-Algesheim and hosts, among other things, the Rheinhessische Bicycle Museum.
