Adelheid of Burgundy (around 931–999) - "Mother of the Kingdoms"

Adelheid, Queen of Italy from 947-950, helped Otto the Great by their joint marriage from 951 to rule over Italy. In 962 she was crowned empress as the first wife of a Carolingian ruler.

Through them, the claim to the imperial throne was transferred from the Italian to the German king and retained until 1806. The educated and influential woman succeeded for the first time in enforcing a clear participation of the German queen in the rule. As a prime example of a Christian ruler, she was even venerated as a saint in Alsace soon after her death. Adelheid - empress since 962 - has demonstrably been to the Ingelheim imperial palace four times.
